The Boys Club of Oak Ridge has opened a new, state-of-the-art technology center, leading Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s (B&GCA) Movement to create digital opportunities for its more than 3.5 million youth, as well as Club professionals. The facility is one of thousands to be established in Clubs nationwide as a result of B&GCA’s Operation Connect program. This program is B&GCA’s strategic, technology initiative designed with the goal of ensuring that Club members and professionals not only have access to technology, but are computer and Internet literate as well. Funding for the center was made possible through a grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
The facility is equipped with 10 IBM PC's, a Hewlett-Packard laser printer, high-speed internet, digital photography equipment, and software including Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Office XP Professional, FrontPage 2002, Publisher 2002, Picture It! Premium Edition 7.0, and Encarta Reference Library 2003 (includes Africana, Encyclopedia Deluxe, Interactive World Atlas, World English Dictionary).
One program, Club Tech, sponsored by Microsoft, will not only provide Club members with access to technology, but will outfit Club professionals with the resources needed to incorporate technology into every aspect of the Clubs management.
Every child utilizing the technology room must have a parent sign the Boys Club of Oak Ridge technology room policy agreement.
